Pretty Yende, is the name that just got a place in the Book of records as she the first ever African singer to perform at a coronation ceremony of a UK monarch. Having performed in some of the world’s greatest opera houses, from the Metropolitan Opera House to the Paris Opera, via La Scala in Milan, the 38-year-old Opera singer, sang a work by British composer Sarah Class, had been in demand for the past 10 years.
May 6th, 2023 was a day not Iike any other in the singer’s life and the world at large. It was set aside for the coronation of HRH King Charles III in front of tens of millions of television viewers. The invitation came in as a highly symbolic one as the singer claims to be the first African singer to sing solo at a coronation of English kings and queens.
Very active on social media, the Opera singer for several years now launched the hashtags #Prettyjourney (meaning both the journey of Pretty and beautiful journey), and #PrettyArmy in a bid to encourage and inspire her numerous fans and followers.
Pretty Yende was born in 1985 in a township in Piet Retief, a South African eastern city still under apartheid, the singer still can’t believe she was invited to sing at the coronation of Charles III, who a year ago heard her sing at Windsor Castle when he was still Prince of Wales .
